Argentina or Argentine Republic is the second largest country in area in South America,
second to Brazil and the eighth largest country in the world. Argentina’s capital and
largest city is Buenos Aires founded in 1536.
Buenos Aires is the political, economic, social, and cultural center of Argentina.
The City of Buenos Aires is a federal district and includes the city and 48 barrios or
neighborhoods.
Gran Buenos Aires includes both the City of Buenos Aires and the
19 suburbs, known as partidos or municipalities. In 2005, 3 million people lived in
Buenos Aires and additional 10 million people lived within Gran Buenos Aires.
Buenos Aires is Argentina’s major trading center. The majority of the country’s
agricultural exports includes wheat, flax, meat, dairy products, hides, and wool.
The Río de la Plata estuary formed by the confluence of the Paraná and Uruguay rivers
keeps Buenos Aires cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
Three-fourths of the total population, are descendants of Italian and Spanish immigrants,
millions of whom came to Argentina between the 1880s and 1930s and settled in Buenos
Aires. Also from European ancestry residents includes Irish, British, Swiss, French, and
Russian.
Spanish is the overwhelmingly dominant language in Buenos Aires. Historically French was
the second language, but English is now the second language of students and business.
85 percent of Buenos Aires population is Catholic with much smaller Protestant religious
denominations and synagogues to serve the city’s Jewish community.
Buenos Aires is one of just a handful of cities, including Madrid and Mexico City, that
dominate intellectual and artistic life in the Spanish-speaking world. Buenos Aires has
produced many prominent Spanish-language writers of the 20th century,
including Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, and Manuel Puig.
The University of Buenos Aires was founded in 1821. It has a student body of more than
200,000 students. Since the 1960s many privately supported universities have been
established in Buenos Aires.
