Office of the Defence Attaché Santiago is the capital and largest city of Chile. Other major Chilian cities are Puente Alto, an industrial center; Viña del Mar, a popular resort, Antofagasta a port and mining center; Valparaíso, a principal seaport, and Concepción, an agricultural and industrial center. Northern port cities include Antofagasta, Arica, and Iquique. Southern port cities are Temuco and Osorno. Chile owns a number of islands, including Easter Island, the Juan Fernández Islands, and Sala y Gómez in the South Pacific. Today, Chile has one of the best educational systems in Latin America. The national literacy rate of 97 percent is one of the highest in Latin America. The Chile school system is administered by the federal government under the minister of education. Primary education is free and compulsory for all children between the ages of 6 and 13 throughout Chile. The University of Chile (1738)is a state-operated university in Santiago and is highly respected throughout the world. Other Chilian universities include the Catholic University of Chile (1888), the University of Concepción (1919) and the Catholic University of Valparaíso (1928). Most of Chile's regional capitals have a university and several technical universities. Chile's largest library is the National Library in Santiago and is one of the best libraries in Latin America. Other important cultural institutions include the National Museum of Fine Arts, National Historical Museum, National Museum of Natural History, Natural History Museum in Valparaíso and Salvador Allende Museum of Solidarity.
