Edmonton AttractionsAlberta Legislature Building Surrounded by 57 acres of parkland, this beautiful building is a must see for those interested in architecture, politics and history. Completed in 1912 on the site of the original Fort Edmonton, the building features an interpretive centre and gift shop. Free admission and guided tours. Chinatown & Avenue of Nations The impressive Chinatown Gate downtown at 102 Avenue and 97 Street welcomes visitors to the hub of the Chinese community. The gate was built as a symbol of friendship between Edmonton and its sister city, Harbin. Citadel Theatre The largest theatre complex in Canada, this major arts facility houses five theatres (Shoctor, Rice, Zeidler Hall, the Maclab Theatre and Tucker Amphitheatre) as well as production facilities, a bookstore, restaurant and theatre school. Devonian Botanic Garden Highlights of this picturesque attraction features over 10,000 species of plants showcased over 80 acres including an authentic Japanese garden, large collection peony, iris, lilly and dahlia; and 110 acres of nature trails and ecological and wetland reserves. Open year-round. Edmonton Art Gallery One of Alberta's oldest cultural institutions, the Edmonton Art Gallery houses over 4,000 historical and contemporary paintings, sculptures, prints, installation works and photographs with a strong focus on Alberta art. The Children's Gallery offers unique interactive activities for children. Gallery shop and cafe open daily. Francis Winspear Centre The $45-million Winspear Centre features a 1,928-seat "shoe-box" style performance chamber reminiscent of 19th Century European concert halls for optimum acoustics. Home to the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Jubilee Auditorium Commissioned by the Alberta government in 1955 to celebrate the province's 50th anniversary, this 2,700 seat auditorium located near the University of Alberta is home to the Edmonton Opera and Alberta Ballet. Northlands Park Facilities include The Spectrum (Horse Racing and Gaming), AgriCom, Sportex, Golden Garter and Silver Slipper. Northlands Park produces many annual special events including Edmonton's Klondike Days Exposition (July 19-28, 2001), Farmfair International (Nov 3 - 11, 2001) and the Canadian Finals Rodeo (Nov. 7 -11, 2001) Odyssium Edmonton's space and science centre has four new galleries; the human body in the Body Fantastic, mystery in Mystery Avenue, Mother Nature in The Green's House and explore space in Space Place. A new science demonstration stage, an observatory, Dow Computer Lab, ham radio station, cafe, giftshop, party rooms, three new learning centres, a science lab. Two major attractions are the Margaret Zeidler Star Theatre, the largest planetarium dome in Canada and Western Canada's first IMAX theatre. Valley Zoo Located on the west side of the city, next to Laurier Park, the Valley Zoo is home to over 400 animals including about 20 endangered species. This facility is an accredited Species Survival Plan breeding centre for five species including cotton-top tamarins, Siberian tiger and snow leopard. Hands-on activities for all ages. West Edmonton Mall The largest shopping shopping and entertainment centre in the world, West Edmonton Mall features over 800 stores and services and more than 110 restaurants and eateries. Attractions include the world's largest indoor amusement park with 24 rides, the World Waterpark with slides, a wave-pool and bungee jumping; Deep Sea Adventure with submarine rides, daily dolphin presentations and over 200 marine life species in the Sea Life Caverns; Professors Wem's adventure golf and the NHL-sized Ice Palace. The mall's nightlife includes the Las Vegas- style Palace Casino, Red's Rec Room, Jubilations Dinner Theatre,Yuk Yuk's Komedy Kabaret and more.
