The Spanish also travelled up the coast of California and settled in the south-western part of what is now British Columbia from 1752 to 1791. They made land claims there until the Spanish Empire lost the settlements to the British in 1818. Most early Spanish emigrants chose to re-settle in Spanish colonies in Central and South America. From 1913 until 1950 only 4,000 Spanish immigrants had entered Canada. After 1950 it was the economy which prompted many to leave Spain and Canadian census statistics indicate that there were about 213,100 persons of Spanish origin in Canada in 2001 with approximately 75 percent living in Ontario or Quebec. |
