Welcome to Montreal, Quebec, Canada
The native Indian settlement of Hochelaga was a trading post when Jacques Cartier
planted his cross atop Mont-Royal. The first French settlers founded the colony of
Ville-Marie in 1642 on the same site as Hochelaga only to rename it Montreal a few short
years later.
A French settlement for most of its existence, Montreal is also the second largest
French-speaking city in the world outside of France. Montreal was incorporated into the
British Empire in 1760. Montreal is the second largest city in Canada with a population
of over 1.7 million with 3.3 million in the greater metropolitan region.
Multi-cultural neighborhoods include Chinatown (between Coté and Saint-Laurent), Little
Italy (bordered by the quadrangle of St-Ziotique), Jean-Talon Boulevard,(Drolet and
Marconi), the Greek community of Park-Ex (Park Avenue), the Rainbow Village or simply
The Village (along Sainte-Catherine, from Saint-Hubert to Papineau), the Quartier Latin
francophone hub of Montreal located between Sainte-Catherine and Sherbrooke from
Sanguinet to Berri) and Plateau Mont-Royal the trendy community of artistes and
fashionable Montrealers located north of Sherbrooke and east of Saint-Laurent).
