Introduction to Education Business

There are a wide range of service and product providers that can be classified as education businesses.

In traditional business many of the product or service providers sell to a specific type of consumer. The creator of the product is usually the manufacturer. Most traditional manufacturers sell to national distributors. The distributor controls national shipping and they usually only sell to regional wholesalers. The wholesalers sell to retailers who then retail the product to end users or consumers.

Most schools are set up as a traditional business. The schools will contract with agents who market the school directly or through sub-agents. The schools set a retail price for the students and offer a wholesale price to agents.

Most ESL teachers or tutors are school employees, or contractors. Most teachers who are employees do not own any of the teaching materials that they create.

Teachers who are contractors usually own self-manufactured teaching materials and are able to use them for any of their customers.

In the education business every homestay provider, teacher, tutor, seminar leader, education tour or activity leader, video, DVD, CD, book creator is a manufacturer.

If we look at homestay providers as a business we can see homestay providers that can sell directly to students, through education agents or be sub-contracted by ESL schools.

If we look at ESL tutors most can only sell directly to students. Non of the traditional distribution chains are set up to promote individual ESL tutors. The only avenue for marketing ESL tutors is retail advertising in local newspapers, magazines, flyers, signs, some internet portals, internet classified's and your own webpage.

Creators of educational learning or teaching materials have the traditional publishing distributors and a few additional venues for marketing and distributing their products. The internet offers self-publishing services that enable writers or recorders the ability to manufacture their products on-line. The internet also offers marketing and sales channels that offer payment, distribution and delivery direct to the customer.

The education business is like every other business in that there are traditional formats and exceptions.
